Green Flag Award 2015/16

THREE parks in Poole have again been awarded Green Flag status - the national standard for green spaces.

Upton Country Park, Poole Park and Hamworthy Park are among the record-breaking 1,582 parks and green spaces to be awarded across England and Wales.

The Green Flag Awards in the UK are judged every year by an army of 800 volunteer expert judges who visit and assess sites against eight criteria including including horticulture, cleanliness and community involvement.

This is Upton Country Park’s tenth Green Flag, while Poole Park has been awarded the status eight times, and Hamworthy Park six times.

Councillor John Rampton, cabinet portfolio holder for environment said: “We are extremely proud of the variety and quality of open spaces across Poole, and with this year’s Green Flag awards coinciding with events for Love Parks Week, there really is no better time to celebrate these areas as well as the extensive work of volunteers and council staff to ensure they remain places for residents and visitors to enjoy all year round.”

The Award Scheme is run by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy on behalf of the Department for Communities and Local Government.

Each of Poole’s three award-winning parks benefits from its own group of “Friends”, who help raise funds and take part in activities to improve, protect and promote the parks.
